How long has this hack been worked on?

It has a pretty complicated backstory! Tomato worked on an early version from January 30th, 2007 to March 19th, 2007. He stopped because of how limited hacking tools were back then, and also (presumably) to work on the MOTHER 3 Fan Translation.

Then, H.S started his own iteration from December 1st, 2010 to April 30th, 2020, at which point he vanished from the community with no trace. He didn't ever share his project files with the community, so it felt like the project had been irrevocably lost.

In August 2021, a community effort to gather and archive all maps, sprites, music, and other assets created over the past decade for the project led Gabbi to start her own iteration. She used a few maps H.S posted to the forum as a launching-off point, but otherwise started from scratch. With the help of the PK Hack community, she's been working from December 5th, 2021 to the present day. [Video]

On the whole, it's been worked on for about thirteen years.

What platform is it on?

This project is a ROM hack of EarthBound. It will be distributed on this website as a patch file, and is playable on emulators and also on original Super NES hardware via flashcarts like the FXPAK Pro, which we've been playtesting on.

Which emulator should I use?

Mesen and Snes9x are both excellent. If you're on Mac, OpenEmu is pretty good.
You can also find SNES emulators for various other devices, like phones or modded consoles.
If your device can run EarthBound, it can run this hack.

Will random encounters be reduced?

Since this uses EarthBound's game engine (due to it being a ROM hack), all of the enemies are visible on the overworld and there aren't any random encounters.

Which translation will this hack use?

The Sandhop translation, with minimal adjustments to improve grammar, spelling errors, and clarity informed by Tomato's translation of Mother 1+2.

Why doesn't Ninten have his bandana? Make him look less like Ness!

We based the sprite off of the clay model, which doesn't have one. We don't think the MOTHER 2 sprite artists would have based things off of anything other than official art or the original development materials. He doesn't have a bandana in strategy guide illustrations from back then either. He has different-colored socks and shoes, a slimmer striped shirt, and doesn't wear a backpack. Ness is the one that looks like him.

Is this MOTHER: Encore?

No, that is a different project with different creative goals and scope.

What are this project's creative goals?

Our goal is to imitate the original MOTHER 2 developers, in sprite style, tileset/map style, music, and programming. We're also trying to create something that feels like it comes from a what-if kind of scenario. An alternate universe where EarthBound had been a massive hit and had seen an official re-release with both games in one big box. What would that have looked and played like? What would the strategy guide have looked like?

Basically, it plays like an upgraded version of the original EarthBound Beginnings in EarthBound's game engine, which is exactly what it is!

What other hacks can I play while I wait for this to come out?

The PK Hack community has been holding "Jank Jam" events. People are given one or two weeks to create a hack, and told to make them as janky and short (and therefore, finishable) as possible. Incredibly, everyone has consistently gone above and beyond and made stunning, delightfully good hacks depsite the time limit. You can check them all out here!

Additionally, our main map designer Tricimir worked on Mother: Cognative Dissonance. If you haven't played it, please give it a shot. It's programmed in RPG Maker 2000, and is one of the few EarthBound fangames to ever see the light of day.

And finally, check out Bound to the Dark World. It's a hack that recreates the entirety of Deltarune Chapter 1 in EarthBound's game engine, coded by my friends Julie and Isaiah.

When is this coming out?

✨ June 14th, 2026 ✨

Will there be a demo?

No.
